«The farmhouses of Milan are sleeping dragons of hundreds of square meters to which the city has turned its back for decades: they are waking up.». These are the first word written in the Manifesto of the Associatione Cascine Milano. A body created to establish and promote an integrated system of places dedicated to agriculture, healthy eating, social living, environmental care and the organization of aggregative and cultural events in the Milanese metropolitan area. The landscape of the whole Lombardy was modeled by the wise farmers who lived and worked in the farms. Their work was aided by water: present in large quantities, both in the form of rivers and streams, and gushing from springs. The method to use it more efficiently, since Roman times, was the excavation of the canal system called Navigli. Nowadays these fundamental elements of the territory are often neglected. This thesis deals with the recovery of five degraded farmhouses located along the Naviglio della Martesana, in the area comprehended from Milan to the Adda river. This area, rich in history and prestigious buildings thanks to the influence of the “Naviglio piccolo”, still retains some features of peasant culture. The project intends to integrate these farmhouses with the Martesana cycle path, which runs alongside the canal and is widely used by the citizens of the area but also by the increasingly numerous bicycle tourists, who need services not yet present in adequate quantities. The recovery is aimed at providing new spaces for the production, sale and consumption of agricultural goods, equipping the cycle path with better services and supporting the establishment of a new Local Park with Supra-municipal Interest (LPSI) to expand the Regional Ecological Network. This new green infrastructure would constitute a new green corridor able to connect the various LPSI and regional parks present and to penetrate the inhabited centers improving the well-being of citizens. A famous phrase by Gio Ponti reads “Italy was made half by God and half by architects”, we add the farmers, who from north to south have shaped our land making it unique in the world. Now, agriculture must recover its spaces.
Ecco, oggi l’agricoltura deve recuperare i propri spazi.

Abstract
Now, agriculture must recover its spaces.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
