The Wall of Porta Romana

The thesis addresses the project of The Wall of Porta Romana in the complex context of Milan. It investigates the history, present, and future of Milan. This investigation is crucial because the project aims to revitalize not only Porta Romana as an independent entity but also the entire perimeter of Milan. Libraries have evolved with time. They no longer solely serve the individual reader but also cater to the vast range of tools associated with the future library, serving the entire community. Combining the important role libraries serve in the community as a knowledge hub and public space, witht the prominent historical location of Porta Romana, a landmark is born in Milan. The development of the Wall of Porta Romana needed to embrace the idea of a long journey of a user inside the building, where the user would be captivated the not just architecture, but sculptural piece. This sculptural piece evolved through organic experimentation to achieve the flow and flexibility of a user, not just circulation or spaces, but visually as well. Beyond the sharpness and formality of the Wall is designed with organic forms that are inclusive, extending as far as the eye can see, resembling a canyon. Through this studio and project, we achieved coherence by integrating design, structure, and technology while always keeping in mind that we are constructing a library meant to endure for future generations. We made functional, technological, and even atmospheric choices for the library of the future. These choices were sometimes driven by the needs of the structure, sometimes by the needs of the users, and at other times by the needs of the city. We modernized the building technically for the “21st-century library” by implementing structural innovations, automation systems, and utilizing alternative sustainable materials. La tesi affronta il progetto del Muro di Porta Romana nel complesso contesto di Milano. Indaga la storia, il presente e il futuro di Milano. Questa indagine è cruciale perché il progetto mira a rivitalizzare non solo Porta Romana come entità indipendente, ma anche l'intero perimetro di Milano. Le biblioteche si sono evolute nel tempo. Non servono più solo il lettore individuale, ma si rivolgono anche alla vasta gamma di strumenti associati alla biblioteca del futuro, servendo l'intera comunità. Unendo il ruolo importante che le biblioteche svolgono nella comunità come hub del sapere e spazio pubblico, con la prominente posizione storica di Porta Romana, nasce un punto di riferimento a Milano. Lo sviluppo del Muro di Porta Romana doveva abbracciare l'idea di un lungo percorso di un utente all'interno dell'edificio, dove l'utente sarebbe stato affascinato non solo dall'architettura, ma anche dalla componente scultorea. Questa componente scultorea è evoluta attraverso sperimentazioni organiche per ottenere il flusso e la flessibilità di un utente, non solo in termini di circolazione o spazi, ma anche visivamente. Oltre alla nitidezza e alla formalità, il Muro è progettato con forme organiche che sono inclusive, estendendosi fin dove può arrivare lo sguardo, simili a un canyon. Attraverso questo studio e progetto, abbiamo raggiunto coerenza integrando design, struttura e tecnologia, tenendo sempre presente che stiamo costruendo una biblioteca destinata a perdurare per le future generazioni. Abbiamo fatto scelte funzionali, tecnologiche e persino atmosferiche per la biblioteca del futuro. Queste scelte sono state talvolta guidate dalle esigenze della struttura, talvolta dalle esigenze degli utenti e altre volte dalle esigenze della città. Abbiamo modernizzato l'edificio tecnicamente per la "biblioteca del XXI secolo" attraverso innovazioni strutturali, sistemi di automazione e l'utilizzo di materiali sostenibili alternativi.
