Bridging the gap between cultural identity and urban development: A case of Koliwadas along the Mahim Bay, Mumbai

One of the biggest challleges of 21st century developing India is its highly paced globalisation process. This is leading to increase in population and urban development. This increased urbanisation is erasing the cultural identity of the historically rich country. As we know development is very important for having a better future, it is also very crucial to retain the roots and the foundation from where it all began since that defines the meaning of any city. This thesis focuses on bridging this increasing gap between the slowly diminishing cultural identity and the urban development. Qualitative and observatory research methods aid in analysing the exisiting scenarios and acheiving a desired output. Exisiting literature hepls in generating a hypostheis as to why public realm can assist as a tool to merge these drifting aspects of the cities character. The thesis further focuses on using UNESCO’s recommendation for Historic Urban Landscapes as an approach to intervene on the public realm. To have a cohesice, human centric and revived urban identity, this proposal provides a base and an example for urban planners, governments, designers, students and resaechers to continue working on using the concept of landscape as a bridge to have a well designed better living environmet in many more similarly characterised cities.

Uno delle sfide più grandi dell’India in via di sviluppo nel 21° secolo è il suo processo di globalizzazione altamente accelerato. Questo sta portando a un aumento della popolazione e dello sviluppo urbano. Questa urbanizzazione crescente sta cancellando l’identità culturale di un paese storicamente ricco. Come sappiamo, lo sviluppo è molto importante per avere un futuro migliore, ma è fondamentale mantenere le radici e le fondamenta da cui tutto ha avuto inizio, poiché questo definisce il significato di qualsiasi città. Questa tesi si concentra sul colmare questo crescente divario tra l’identità culturale, che sta lentamente diminuendo, e lo sviluppo urbano. I metodi di ricerca qualitativa e osservativa aiutano ad analizzare gli scenari esistenti e a raggiungere un risultato desiderato. La letteratura esistente aiuta a generare un’ipotesi sul motivo per cui il dominio pubblico può fungere da strumento per unire questi aspetti divergenti del carattere della città. La tesi si concentra ulteriormente sull’uso delle raccomandazioni dell’UNESCO per i Paesaggi Urbani Storici come approccio per intervenire nel dominio pubblico. Per avere un’identità urbana coesa, centrata sull’uomo e rivitalizzata, questa proposta fornisce una base e un esempio per pianificatori urbani, governi, designer, studenti e ricercatori per continuare a lavorare sull’utilizzo del concetto di paesaggio come ponte per avere un ambiente di vita ben progettato e migliore in molte altre città caratterizzate in modo simile.
