The dissertation investigates the role of design-driven approaches in strategizing digital transformation within cultural institutions, focusing on participatory assessment and strategic development. Through an interdisciplinary methodology that integrates Participatory Action Research (PAR) and design-led evaluation frameworks, the research explores how participatory and people-centered design practices can influence strategic planning and digital literacy among museum practitioners. By examining three Italian cultural institutions with three different governance models and approaches to digitalization, the study evaluates the effects the ex-ante participatory assessment methodology on digital strategy development. The findings reveal how participatory digital strategizing not only enhances stakeholder engagement and digital confidence but also fosters decision-making processes. The dissertation contributes to design for cultural heritage literature by proposing a comprehensive design-led framework for participatory ex-ante assessment, offering a strategic model that connects digital transformation to cultural institutions' mission and vision through inclusive, collaborative practices.
La presente dissertazione indaga il ruolo degli approcci design-driven nello sviluppo strategico delle istituzioni culturali in ambito di trasformazione digitale, con un focus sulla valutazione partecipativa e sul sviluppo strategico. Attraverso una metodologia interdisciplinare che integra Participatory Action Research (PAR) e framework di valutazione design-led, la ricerca esplora come le pratiche di design partecipativo e incentrato sulle persone possano influenzare la pianificazione strategica e l’alfabetizzazione digitale tra i professionisti museali. Analizzando tre istituzioni culturali italiane caratterizzate da differenti modelli di governance e approcci alla digitalizzazione, lo studio valuta gli effetti della metodologia di valutazione partecipativa ex-ante nello sviluppo delle strategie digitali. I risultati evidenziano come lo sviluppo strategico partecipativo non solo rafforzi il coinvolgimento degli stakeholder e la confidenza digitale, ma favorisca anche i processi decisionali. La tesi contribuisce alla letteratura sul design per il patrimonio culturale proponendo un framework completo guidato dal design per la valutazione partecipativa ex-ante, offrendo un modello strategico che connette la trasformazione digitale alla missione e alla visione delle istituzioni culturali attraverso pratiche inclusive e collaborative.
