The increasing vulnerability of Alpine territories, aggravated by climate change, tourism pressure, and the abandonment of built heritage, calls for a reflection on the role of architectural design in defining new strategies for the conservation and enhancement of high-altitude landscapes. This research focuses on Cantoniera 3 at the Stelvio Pass, originally built to support road maintenance and assist travelers, which today stands as a testimony to a disused territorial system that nevertheless retains significant cultural and landscape value. The adopted methodology develops a multiscalar approach. The analysis begins with a critical examination of the dynamics affecting the Italian Alpine region, investigating its environmental, climatic, and socioeconomic transformations. It then narrows its focus to the Valtellina and the Stelvio Pass system, culminating in the study of the road maintenance houses that historically served the pass infrastructure. The thesis highlights how the vulnerabilities affecting Alpine territories cannot be solved through isolated interventions, but instead require an integrated vision that connects landscape, infrastructure, and built heritage. The study of the network of the Case Cantoniere reconstructs the historical functioning of the road service system and the role these buildings played in shaping the Alpine landscape. The research identifies four design strategies (slowing down, reactivating, protecting, and raising awareness) which guide the intervention on the existing built environment. The objective is not merely to restore a historic building, but to transform it into a device capable of generating new territorial relationships, promoting slow tourism, scientific research, and cultural enhancement. The reuse of Cantoniera 3, conceived as a pilot project, offers a broader reflection on how the recovery of minor infrastructural architecture can contribute to a distributed network of territorial outposts, replicable along the Stelvio Pass and in other Alpine contexts. The enhancement of built heritage thus becomes an opportunity to assign new meanings and functions to infrastructures that have lost their original purpose, contributing to a development model based on landscape protection, knowledge of dispersed heritage, and more conscious forms of mountain use and enjoyment.

Abstract
The enhancement of built heritage thus becomes an opportunity to assign new meanings and functions to infrastructures that have lost their original purpose, contributing to a development model based on landscape protection, knowledge of dispersed heritage, and more conscious forms of mountain use and enjoyment.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
