In the national debate on the future of Italy’s geographies, the discussion has long been polarised around a dichotomous narrative that contrasts the dynamism of the major cities with the abandonment of inner Italy. Beyond this polarisation, contemporary urban research — guided by the study "Italia di mezzo. Prospettive per la provincia in transizione", edited by Arturo Lanzani (DAStU) — has recently delineated a third, substantial portion of the peninsula: a province comprising scattered urban settlements, over-exploited plains and medium-sized towns, home to over half the national population. Within this vast mosaic of Italy in the middle, the present study focuses on the specific reality of small municipalities, redefining their liminal and suspended status within the new taxonomy of Italy Almost. Immersed in an urban-rural continuum, these smaller towns find themselves in a state of liminality: they share the demographic vulnerabilities of inner Italy, yet remain not marginal enough to be included in a national dialogue that concerns them. Taking the rural municipality of Flaibano, in the upper Friulian plain, as an exploratory paradigm of this intermediate vulnerability, this thesis analyses its landscape and social scars, and the paradox of a housing welfare system reduced to logistical support for commuting. In response to this analysis, the spatial design project Claps proposes an acupunctural design strategy, flexible and reversible, which harnesses an endogenous regenerative driver to revitalise the village community, converting a historic farmhouse into a community hub combining agroecology, outdoor education and accommodation for slow tourism. Through functional hybridisation, adaptive reuse and the collectivisation of care practices, the spaces are redefined as everyday infrastructure for the local community. The project thus wishes to foster the creation of a transferable methodological strategy capable of defusing the functional dependence of the dormitory towns of Italy Almost.

Abstract
The project thus wishes to foster the creation of a transferable methodological strategy capable of defusing the functional dependence of the dormitory towns of Italy Almost.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
