Shot peening is a surface treatment usually used to increase the fatigue strength of components subjected to cyclic loading. A shot stream of small particles is thrown against the surface of the component to be processed. These media can be of two different nature: metallics or ceramics; it depends on the component to be processed. The shot stream causes the formation of a superficial compressive layer and it is responsable of surface hardening. These two factors have been long recognized to have benefical effect on the fatigue strength of a component. But we have a detrimental effect too, which is the increase of surface roughness; so in order to give the best results, the process parametres (material, velocity, shape and size of the shots) have to be correctly chosen. Normally shot peening is done on notched part, that’s because the strain high gradient just under the notch results in considerable decrease in the stress level, and the compressive layer decreases the crack grouth rate. In literature we can’t find yet a criteria for the prediction of the fatigue limit of shot peened parts which is universally accepted, this depends on the complessive and not deterministic nature of the phenomen. So the target of the work is to make a comparison between the methods for the prediction of the fatigue limit of shot peened components which have been proposed in academic’s world. First of all it is made a theoretical comparison between the criteria and then it is made a numerical comparison: the criteria are applied to two different experimental campaigns (rotating bending and axial fatigue), in order to check which of the methods is able to give the best fit of the experimental results. The comparison lights the limits of the methods and the field in which they can be successfully applied; where possible it have been introduced appropriate corrections in order to have a better agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract
The comparison lights the limits of the methods and the field in which they can be successfully applied; where possible it have been introduced appropriate corrections in order to have a better agreement with the experimental results.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
