International expositions, as the global events, have been hold all around the world in the 159 years history. Since the beginning in 1851, the expositions resemble a great encyclopedia that have exhibited billions achievements of human civilization, giving the explanations to past and the prospects to future. Actually, from the other viewpoint, the expositions also could be considered as an international platform of information communication. Whatever the purposes that the organizers intend to achieve, the communicative essence of expositions has never changed form beginning. Under this situation, the visual communication of expositions has the typical representativeness to the international communication. Meanwhile, as the global events, the expositions almost relate to all national cultures. And then, the expositions also strode across the period of the most turbulent transition of human world, which from Industrial Revolution until now days. Therefore the culture and the history become two important factors that deeply influence the communication of expositions. The whole thesis concentrates on the analysis about the visual communication design of expositions. By the research and the comparison about the instances of visual design in the history of expositions in 159 years, the thesis will expatiate on the evolution of the visual communication design of expositions, thus revealing the laws of visual communication design when it is applied in the same target (Expo), but the different cultural backgrounds (host) and the different historical backgrounds (time). And at the same time, from the particular view of the expositions that closely concerns the development of the human civilization and the national cultures, this thesis also conceives to reveal the evolution of the graphic design from the second half of 19th century until today. For establishing a basic understanding about the expositions and the design trends that have influenced the visual communication of expositions, I made this statistic diagram based on the chronology line of expositions. This diagram is consisted of the frequency of staging, the main design trends and the geographic distribution of events. The most expositions that are referred in this diagram are sanctioned by the official organization of international expositions in Pairs, which named ‘Bureau International des Expositions’. In the part of frequency, I have marked the times of staging expositions for every five years then connected them together to compose this diagram of frequency. We can easily find out a period of stagnation for 13 years that was under the shadow of World War I, we also can see a phase more prosperous that there were 6 expositions had been took place during 5 years in 20th century.
