An intervention in urban areas, that are already built and consolidated within the city, ought to attempt to reinterpret and improve the complex system of relations between the parties, enhancing and redefi ning the existing through new forms of project. This work is part of a wider process of urban transformation, that will lead to the realization of the Sustainable Campus. So, the dissertation becomes an opportunity to experiment a new idea of the city. The object of the thesis is the recovery and the redevelopment of the area of the City University in Milan, containing the Faculty of Veterinary, and in particular the design of a new auditorium. The aim of this project is centered on the coordination and integration of the quality of life, of the cultural opportunities and of the involvement of all members of society. One objective of this work is the integrated planning, in order to achieve an optimization and rationalization of resources, and an improvement in the quality of the project, taking into account the various fi elds of application, such as structures, technologies, implantations, ergonomic and acoustical systems. More, the project aims to sustainability as a goal, not only from the point of view of energy, but also considering the social and environmental aspects, with the objective of creating a network of public spaces, able to relate areas with different functions. The intervention aims to the recovery of existing buildings, with a full respect for their conservation, and inserts some new elements that, while following the logic of the context, are distinct in form and in language. The project forecasts the insertion of a student residence with connected services, and a public facility, that is an auditorium, in order to create a pole of attraction for the city. Currently, on the South boundary of the area of intervention, there is a small conference hall built between the 60s and 70s, that stands as a superfetation, inconsistent with the original project. Our intention was to design a new auditorium, to serve as a perspective theatrical for the entire block. The geometry has been designed taking into account the context in which it occurs, and the volume emphasizes the sculptural form of the building. The auditorium can be defi ned as a fragment embedded in the ground, with a sharp and slender form. The project has been deepened with a series of specifi c studies and analyses, to reach the engineering of the project. A great attention was paid to the integration between the complex shape of the building, and his structure. The adoption of innovative engineering choices has allowed to obtain a building with high structural performances, and the roof beams were modeled appropriately, in order to maintain the external shape of the casing. In addition, a part of the hall is cantilevered on the underground space, so it was necessary to shape some prestressed concrete septa, within which the vertical distribution is positioned. To ensure an optimal acoustic comfort of the hall, the intrados of the cover has been designed exactly to obtain the correct refl ections of sound waves, and to avoid the creation of echoes and shadow areas. Since this is a hall for prose works, some acoustical analyses were performed, and appropriate materials were selected, in order to get the best reverberation time. To emphasize the articulated geometry of the new building, with continuous surfaces and homogeneous roofi ng and facade materials, it was decided to use a copper coating. In addition, the design of energy-effi cient technology packages and integration of appropriate system choices designed to minimize loads, maximize the performances of components and resorting to the use of renewable sources, allowed to achieve the energy class A. All these choices contributed to achieve the goal of an integrated and sustainable planning.
Intervenire in aree già costruite e consolidate all’interno del tessuto urbano rende necessario il tentativo di reinterpretare e di migliorare l’intricato sistema di relazioni tra le parti, valorizzando e ridefi nendo l’esistente attraverso le nuove forme di progetto. Il lavoro di tesi si inserisce all’interno del più ampio processo di trasformazione urbana che porterà alla concretizzazione del Campus Sostenibile, diventando così occasione per sperimentare una nuova idea di città. L’oggetto di tesi è il recupero e la riqualifi cazione dell’area di Veterinaria in Città Studi a Milano, in particolare la progettazione di un nuovo auditorium. L’intento progettuale è centrato sul coordinamento e sull’integrazione della qualità della vita, dell’offerta culturale e del coinvolgimento di tutte le componenti sociali. Uno degli obbiettivi è quello della progettazione integrata al fi ne di ottenere un’ottimizzazione e razionalizzazione delle risorse e un aumento della qualità progettuale, tenendo conto di varie discipline: strutturali, tecnologiche, impiantistiche, ergotecniche ed acustiche. Il progetto ha inoltre come obbiettivo la sostenibilità, non solo dal punto di vista energetico ma anche degli aspetti sociali e ambientali, con la volontà di creare una rete di spazi pubblici di interconnessione capaci di mettere in relazione zone con funzioni diverse. L’intervento è mirato al recupero degli edifi ci esistenti, nel totale rispetto conservativo degli stessi e l’inserimento di nuovi elementi che, pur seguendo la logica del contesto, se ne discostano nella forma e nel linguaggio. Il progetto prevede l’inserimento di una residenza per studenti con annessi servizi e una funzione pubblica quale l’auditorium al fi ne di creare un polo attrattore per la città. Attualmente sul limite Sud del lotto d’intervento è presente una piccola sala congressi costruita tra gli anni ‘60 e ‘70 che si pone come superfetazione incongruente con l’impianto originale. La volontà è stata quella di progettare un nuovo auditorium che faccia da quinta prospettica per l’intero isolato. La geometria è stata progettata tenendo conto del contesto nel quale si inserisce e il volume sottolinea la forma scultorea dell’edificio. L’auditorium si defi nisce come un frammento incastonato nel terreno dalla forma affusolata e slanciata. Il progetto è stato approfondito da una serie di studi e analisi specifi che per giungere all’ingegnerizzazione del progetto. Molta attenzione è stata rivolta all’integrazione tra la forma complessa dell’edificio e la struttura. L’adozione di scelte ingegneristiche innovative ha permesso di ottenere un edifi cio con elevate prestazioni strutturali, infatti le travi di copertura sono state modellate opportunamente proprio per assecondare la forma esterna dell’involucro. Inoltre, parte della sala risulta in aggetto sullo spazio ipogeo ed è stato quindi necessario sagomare dei setti in c.a.p. all’interno dei quali è posizionata la distribuzione verticale. Per garantire un comfort acustico ottimale della sala è stato studiato l’intradosso della copertura in modo tale da ottenere le giuste rifl essioni delle onde sonore ed evitare la creazione di echi e zone di ombra. Essendo una sala per la prosa sono state effettuate analisi acustiche e scelti opportuni materiali al fi ne di ottenere il miglior tempo di riverberazione. Per enfatizzare la geometria articolata del nuovo manufatto, con superfi ci continue ed omogenee tra copertura e facciata, si è optato per l’utilizzo di un rivestimento in rame. Inoltre la progettazione di pacchetti tecnologici ad elevata effi cienza energetica e l’integrazione di scelte impiantistiche opportune mirate a minimizzare i carichi, massimizzare le prestazioni dei componenti e ricorrere all’utilizzo di fonti rinnovabili, hanno permesso di raggiungere la classe energetica A. Tutte queste scelte hanno concorso al raggiungimento dell’obbiettivo di una progettazione integrata e sostenibile.
