Ice accretion causes a different geometry of aeronautical surface, so also a different aerodynamic field. It has been necessary to develop in PoliMIce an iterative routine that calculates the ice accretion, the new geometry, the new aerodynamic field and the new water droplets’ trajectories and that repeats these steps each specified time interval. To verify the accuracy of PoliMIce, numerical results are supplied: NACA 0012 airfoils are studied for the 2D case, while finite span straight wings and OneraM6 wings are studied for the 3D case.

Abstract
A new framework for the prediction of ice accretion over aeronautical surfaces has been developed, this project has been called PoliMIce. In this thesis a new mathematical model for the icing has been proposed and it is implemented in PoliMIce. A public interface allows to use several CFD solvers for the aerodynamic studies. In the present work OpenFOAM is considered as the default solver for the solution of the aerodynamic field and to compute the lagrangian trajectories of the water droplets. This interface calculates also the parameters needed by the mathematical icing model which are: the collection efficiency, the convective heat transfer coefficient, the recovery factor and the external velocity of the boundary layer. To verify the accuracy of PoliMIce, numerical results are supplied: NACA 0012 airfoils are studied for the 2D case, while finite span straight wings and OneraM6 wings are studied for the 3D case.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
