This work deals with the effects of the LURSAK coating in railway axles commonly used for freight trains, realized in A1N steel. The innovative coating allows to reach an higher protection of the mechanical component against corrosion and mechanical impact. In order to evaluate the improvements produced by the coating an experimental campaign in compliance with the guidelines of the UNI EN 13261 standard has been performed. Further experimental tests of impact have been performed using ballast. Both of the experiments have been performed using coated and non-coated axles. Finite element models have been realized in order to evaluate the state of tension of the structure. The results of the experimental tests and the finite element analysis have been used for the crack growth life (crack propagation ) evaluation, in the characteristic zones of the axles indicated by the standard. Crack growth simulations have been conducted by means of AFGROW software. Starting from the propagation data the total failure probability has been determined. This work showed that not only LURSAK coating increases the time duration of A1N axles, but also (it) allows longer periods without maintenance operations.

Abstract
This work showed that not only LURSAK coating increases the time duration of A1N axles, but also (it) allows longer periods without maintenance operations.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
