The proposal for the redevelopment of the Montello Caserma block is based on the reading of the conditions of the urban context and the need to establish a new order of relations between the historic building, deprived of its ancient enclosure, and the city. The Milan block is shown in a balanced combination of spatially defined courts, where the building is an actor in the division and the relationship between the inside and the outside. The inclusiveness of the court combined with a base structure becomes the settlement principle of the project, but unlike the surrounding fabric it is configured as a representative space of collective life, restoring the whole area of the barracks to the city. The definition of a common base, a container of the new services for the district, delimits a sequence of courts placed in relation to each other, represents the link between a private spatiality and public living. The residential buildings are linear and precise elements that rest on the new ground, their design reinforces the division between the courts and further characterizes the type. The basement acquires its own size and its openings dialogue with the historic building. The remaining three sides of the block acquire greater tectonics thanks to smaller entrances and a front characterized by taller buildings, maintaining an alternating configuration of full and empty spaces that defines a rhythmic urban front linked to the measures of the context. The defined block designs an open spatiality with precise density, which incorporates the design of the courts, tying itself to the ground with the compact city. Moreover, the basement allows to restore the continuity between the street and the building curtains of the Milanese fabric, bringing the private open space typical of the modern block to a higher level. The building and the barracks build the backgroud that delimits the new urban park linked to the neighboring Piazza Firenze. Threshold element between the square and the park is a tall and thin building that finds its measure in relation to the Sempione axis system. This tower marks the beginning of the public boulevard and relates to the urban neuralgic system that overlaps the square. The archipelago of bases does not seek the mimesis of the urban characters of the surroundings and consists of a lower density than the context. However, it finds its reason in relation to a structure defined by the city that surrounds it and thanks to this structure is connoted as a key moment of the collective life on the Sempione axis.

Abstract
However, it finds its reason in relation to a structure defined by the city that surrounds it and thanks to this structure is connoted as a key moment of the collective life on the Sempione axis.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
