Il tema della riqualificazione museale del Palazzo Ducale. The theme of the museum redevelopment of ducal Palace. Volto oscuro. La storia celata nell'ombra. History hidden in the shadow

Overlooking the lakes, Palazzo Ducale is the fixed scene of the threshold condition, of the limit in which Mantua lives; and it is at the same time a city gate, a fortress and a city itself, a “palace in the form of a city” It also coincides historically with what is the limit between the water, that is the lakes (the Mincio river), and the area of the built of the historical center in its urban evolution. Following the preparation of an in-depth study of the environment and historical development of the chosen area, we tackled a project that aims to become a unifying and connecting element, then branching out into different projects that work individually. The project themes focus on the creation of a new city access, unused spaces reopening of the building, forgotten by the citizens, focusing on the inclusion of functions that can make this place vital again and at the service not only of the Palazzo Ducale, but also for the city itself. In the themes development a trait in stages was outlined that starts from the San Giorgio’s citadel, to then divide and reach the cardinal points of the historic Gonzaga residence. The project idea wants to create a filter between inside and outside without wanting to divide the two concepts, but creating a new way of accessing the building. From the more extensive environmental analysis to the more detailed, from the most ancient historical development to the most recent, the possibility of working closely with such important historical pre-existences becomes fundamental. We need to raise awareness to implement, at the design level, proposals that try to meet not only the structural needs of historicity, but also those related to the use and function of spaces that are no longer ends in themselves. Each project must accommodate the needs of both the city and individuals.

Affacciato sui laghi, Palazzo Ducale è la scena fissa della condizione di soglia, di limite in cui vive Mantova; ed è allo stesso tempo porta della città, fortezza e città stessa, un “palazzo in forma di città”. Coincide inoltre storicamente con quello che è il limite tra l’acqua, ossia i laghi (il fiume Mincio), e l’area del costruito del centro storico nella sua evoluzione urbana. Successivamente alla predisposizione di uno studio approfondito dello sviluppo dell’ambiente e storico dell’area scelta, abbiamo affrontato un progetto che si prefigge di diventare elemento unificatore e di connessione, diramandosi poi in diversi progetti che lavorano individualmente. Le tematiche progettuali si focalizzano sulla realizzazione di un nuovo accesso alla città, la riapertura degli spazi inutilizzati del palazzo, dimenticati dai cittadini, concentrandosi sull’inserimento di funzioni che possano rendere questo luogo nuovamente vitale e al servizio non solo del Palazzo Ducale, ma anche della città stessa. Nello sviluppo dei temi è stato delineato un carattere di percorso a tappe che parte dalla cittadella di San Giorgio, per poi dividersi e arrivare nei punti cardinali della dimora storica dei Gonzaga. L’idea progettuale vuole realizzare un filtro tra interno ed esterno senza voler dividere i due concetti, ma creando un nuovo modo di accedere all’interno del palazzo. Dall’analisi ambientale più estesa a quella più dettagliata, dallo sviluppo storico più antico a quello più recente, la possibilità di lavorare a stretto contatto con preesistenze storiche così rilevanti diventa fondamentale. Bisogna sensibilizzare ad attuare, a livello progettuale, proposte che cercano di venire incontro non solo alle esigenze strutturali della storicità, ma anche a quelle legate alla fruizione e alla funzionalità di spazi che non sono più fini a sé stessi. Ogni progetto dovrà accogliere le necessità sia della città, sia dei singoli individui.
