The San Dalmazio tower of Pavia, built in the XI century, was restored in the early 90s because investigations had revealed its static instability. The strengthening intervention consisted in the introduction of a truss iron tower within the masonry tower, connected by a network of post-tensioned steel stays. The original scaffolding holes, that are widely present in the four sides of the tower, were used to place post-tensioned steel rods, linked together by steel channels arranged on the inner perimeter of the tower in order to establish a hooping system of the wall not visible from the outside. The main objective of this thesis has been the assessment of the actions taken to restore the San Dalmazio tower; particular attention was paid to the evaluation of the response of the building subjected to wind and earthquake excitations. For this purpose two finite element models were developed: the first one reproduces the tower in its entire geometry, while the second one refers to a small portion of masonry structure. The models have been used to conduct linear-elastic analysis, which were useful for the characterization of the overall dynamic behaviour of the tower and for the quantification of the stress states produced by the different load cases. To evaluate the global collapse strength was adopted a simplified model where are taken into account the nonlinear mechanical properties of materials. The analysis’s results confirmed that the restoration of the San Dalmazio tower has significantly increased its safety level: masonry’s weakness was in fact limited by the confinement given by the rods inserted in the scaffolding holes, while the collaboration with the inner steel tower has lead to a significant increase in the collapse resistance against horizontal loads.

Abstract
The analysis’s results confirmed that the restoration of the San Dalmazio tower has significantly increased its safety level: masonry’s weakness was in fact limited by the confinement given by the rods inserted in the scaffolding holes, while the collaboration with the inner steel tower has lead to a significant increase in the collapse resistance against horizontal loads.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
