The historical-urban analysis of the city of Chicago has allowed us to understand the development of the city and its urban design, characterised by the orthogonal grid, a typical American element, which defines the lots completely saturated by the buildings. The project area is the same as the one which, in 1922, was the subject of the international competition for the Chicago Tribune tower, designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. A century later, the city has expanded, the urban context has changed and the general tendency remains to grow high. The project consists of two towers, differing only in plan dimensions, and a town hall. The lot is a succession of solids and voids where the buildings themselves generate the outdoor public spaces: two squares, which belong to the European tradition and are an exception in the dense grid of the city of Chicago, where collective urban spaces are mainly enclosed within the buildings. The public dimension, articulated by open and enclosed spaces, in the ground and base level of the building complex, creates a dialogue between the horizontality of the city and the verticality of the tall buildings, which in their development host private functions: apartments in the smaller tower and offices in the other one. The aim of the project is to design an architecture that follows the principles of structural sincerity, where all the components dialogue with each other. Architectural form and structure coincide: the shape and the size of each architectural element are justified by its structural function. The verticality of towers, enhanced by the pillars projecting from the façade and never interrupted by the horizontal elements, contrasts with the city hall, whose structure is composed of a roof with a large dimension, supported by perimeter columns, which are compressed under its weight.

Abstract
The verticality of towers, enhanced by the pillars projecting from the façade and never interrupted by the horizontal elements, contrasts with the city hall, whose structure is composed of a roof with a large dimension, supported by perimeter columns, which are compressed under its weight.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
