“Perspectives of an open city” is a project that starts within the Thematic Laboratory focused on the regeneration of the Trappeto district of Catania, the houses of Via Don Gnocchi, and continues as an experimental research thesis. The project deals with the transformation of the existing in an interscalare way, including urban issues, starting from an analysis of the territory, architectural themes, through the design of living spaces with the idea of the “active band”, study of the landscape, focusing on the enhancement of the natural environment and open spaces. The Trappeto district, located on the northern suburb of the city, is part of a large system of public housing belonging to the second half of the twentieth century. The aim of the thesis is to solve problems spread over time, increasing the current social and environmental needs of the context, with attention to climate change. The urban system where the project is inserted has suggested the morphological choice linked to the open city, in which existing and new volumes create an irregular grid of solids and voids that determines the size of public open spaces. The urban project involves a redevelopment aimed at breaking the enclave of the district and reinforcing the conditions of urbanity through: the partial volumetric reorganization through targeted demolitions, the construction of three new volumes, the upgrading of the remaining existing buildings. The new volumes are inserted in the area following the open morphology of the context, adding new public uses in the ground floors. The housing solutions on the upper floors experiment the use of the “active band”. This type, which provides for the placement of the wet strip on the facade alternating services and hybrid spaces, is reinterpreted starting from the studies of Yves Lion to model itself to the volumes of new construction and adapt to the needs of the existing - increasing the size of the interior and providing the accommodation of outdoor spaces. Urban analysis has revealed a lack of permeable areas throughout the neighborhood, now hostage to cars and subject to heat peaks in the summer season. The strategy, to compensate for the scarcity of green and permeable areas, is to reorganize the systems of traffic and parking of vehicles, in order to implement a radical de-paving, bring the Mediterranean scrub in the district, build a network that ensures rich biodiversity and can help mitigate the climate.

Abstract
The strategy, to compensate for the scarcity of green and permeable areas, is to reorganize the systems of traffic and parking of vehicles, in order to implement a radical de-paving, bring the Mediterranean scrub in the district, build a network that ensures rich biodiversity and can help mitigate the climate.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
