The project concerns a university campus inserted in the Targia area, on the outskirts of the city of Syracuse, currently defaced by Europe’s largest petrochemical hub. The creation of a real neighborhood, composed of repeatable modules, aims at a redevelopment of the area and a subsequent expansion towards the Sicilian hinterland. Historical, morphological, infrastructural and green analyses are the starting point for the definition of the system, which consists of buildings mainly reserved for students, but also residences, places for the community, offices, and commercial buildings intended for both Syracuse residents and those from neighboring cities. The theme of the cultural hub, a place for socio-cultural gathering, arranged for cultural assistance and hospitality services for the public, is explored. By definition, a theater and a library have been chosen as symbolic places, which relate to each other through a large square, a place that is also a hub of sociality, meetings and exchanges, metaphorically the image of the city. The positioning of these took into account the natural elements par excellence, the sea and the nature, in which the large square, fulfills the role of connecting them: on one side the large green ‘tongue’ and on the other the beautiful Sicilian sea. This concept is emphasized by the orientation and conformation of the two buildings, expressing a verticality that brings alive the connection with nature. Theater and library, besides being both emblems of community and culture, share the same concept. The central cores are home to the heart of the buildings, while ancillary services are distributed in the side bands that ‘encircle’ the main halls. The whole is expressed by a single building element, the reinforced concrete septum, which serves both a compositional and structural function.

Abstract
The whole is expressed by a single building element, the reinforced concrete septum, which serves both a compositional and structural function.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
