The present work, made with the Politecnico di Milano, is the design and development of the Central Library of Helsinki. The project, based on an international competition organized by the City hall of Helsinki, is a good opportunity to redefine the new aspects of a library in the twenty first century. A preliminary analysis has been done on the work of the City Hall. Indeed, the contemporary architecture for a library has been changing over the years in order to meet the needs of the users. A library is no longer a place only to store books or read them. It has slowly become a place for meeting, training and working together. This library was thought as a new place to live for the inhabitant of Helsinki. Easy to get to and integrated in the cultural network of Helsinki, it will become one of the most important place in the city. The functional description of the spaces in the brief allow us to create various spaces within the building that will provide a wide range of possibilities. Thus the major part of the library is planned but left flexible for the future changes that the building may know. Due to the high need of light, one of the main choice for the project has been a glazed envelope. In order to create a buffer between the indoors and outdoors, we decided to use a double skin façade. This element has been developed on an architectural, technological and energetical level. An overall design process has been used for the project. It includes analyses at different scales: from the context to the study of the internal spaces. Various aspects, such as functional layouts or technological realizations, are taken into account during the overall process.
Quest’analisi comprende molti aspetti, dal funzionale all’ecosostenibilità.
