The present work concerns the recognition of typical crack patterns in masonry historical construction. The present research is based on some theoretical assumption presented at the beginning. Through the analysis of several cracked or collapsed buildings was possible to sketch a catalogue of typical crack patterns for the most common masonry structures. In a second moment, we focused our attention on vaulted constructions. On this particular topic, research is extremely active: everyday new instruments are discovered and allow us to calculate and predict the possible failure mechanism of curved masonry surfaces. The aim of our work was to collect the largest number of cases, articles and studies and in order to broad the crack catalogue. To validate the hypothesis collected in this part of the research we used a finite elements software, in which the vaults have been virtually built. These models have been submitted to a variety of loads or displacement, in order to recreate a real situation and to verify the formation of cracks. The diagnostic procedure has been applied also to a real case study, a farmhouse in the Italian countryside called Cascina di poer. Also in this case we have recreated a virtual model of the building in order to understand the crack pattern visible at the moment. Thanks to this model it has been possible to get a precise response over the causes that generated the fissures in the walls. In a second time, we used the same model to calculate the effects of possible strengthening solution, collected in a refurbishment project. The project concern all the aspects of the restoration of the function of the building: the architectural composition, the technological system and the structural validation of the assumptions.

Abstract
The project concern all the aspects of the restoration of the function of the building: the architectural composition, the technological system and the structural validation of the assumptions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
