The city we took under consideration is Istanbul, specifically the area between the Egyptian bazaar (Misir Çarşi), the Sirkeci Station and the Galata Bridge in the historical peninsula. This area has been the hotspot of the city since the very beginning of its developement. In its early years it hosted the Neorion port, where the foreign colonies settled, and from there departed the ferries for the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. Then in the 1800s, when the city started to transform itself along more western lines, here happened the most important phases of the new devolepement, starting from the construction of a bridge that could connect the historical penisula to Galata. Up to this day this part of the city remains subject to deep transformations, the most recent of which has been the construction of the Marmaray, an underground tunnel 58 meters under the Bosphorus strait, that connects the European shore with the Asian one. The displayed solution is not only the result of the study of the city’s history and its development, but also of first-hand surveys of the area itself, that became fundamental in understanding how it is perceived and lived. The interpretation key we assumed was that of the “pedestrian street” that becomes manifestation of the market and then building. It is a pivotal theme of the Ottoman architecture, repeatedly reinterpreted during the course of history which passed through to modern times with innovations and contaminations. This theme has been the key to define the structure of the project as a sort of linear manufacture shaped as a broken line which defines and distinguishes private and public spaces. It is also connected with the question of the reuse of existing buildings that become a fundamental part of the project through three modality of interpretation: symbiosis, grapht, closure. The idea of the project takes its moves from one of the peculiarities of the city of Istanbul, that is having public places on the top floors of private buldings. This characteristic derives from the saturation of the ground level which brings people to conquer the high spots that become suggestive panoramic points.

Abstract
This characteristic derives from the saturation of the ground level which brings people to conquer the high spots that become suggestive panoramic points.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
