It has been a while that we are hearing about the Expo 2015 in Milano, either it's feasibility, or it's convenience for a country deep in economic crisis, and above all the construction crisis which is supposed to host such an international event. The decision has been made and shortly we will see the results, even though the initial outcome has not been very promising. “Feeding the planet” is the main theme of this exposition; there is the hope that we arrive at a point in which the awareness about one the main side effects of industrial revolution has been completely raised. As the human is partially responsible for the beauty of the word, at least for the artificial part, he also should be hold accountable for the preservation of the resource from which he derives. Confronting such a competition, without a doubt, raises an exciting challenge, and the most complex of them all; primarily because it is part of Italian context, which is touched by the problem of construction crisis, but still with all the resources and the ability to react; second, because the ordeal is to find different solutions to problems through a complex of buildings, which must serve, equally and with the same language, to different categories of users with different levels of knowledge, allowing everyone to live the experience. Another problem to be encountered was the rigorous determination of the required internal surfaces and areas which left little room for being creative in the realization of any shape and form desired. An interesting aspect of the competition is the requested functionality of the buildings. In fact the “Palazzo Italia” will need to be converted, after the event, to a permanent center for the technological research and scientific education, while all the constructions in the “Cardo” are temporary and need to be dismantled and relocated in public spaces in Milan, with different functionalities. Obviously all the construction must meet the precisely predefined objectives of space functionalities and the flow management of different types of users and goods that should reach the various areas of the intended building complex; last but not least, every built-up area will be able to meet the technical requirements specified from standpoint of welfare, environmental sustainability and energy saving, which has led to a meticulous design technology and analytical verification at the later stage. No less important was the building process management, as in such a context the ability to plan and manage a site as large as a polymorph is crucial. Here we have tried to realize a project that responds extremely well to all the requirements of the procurement project, taking special care in thinking about the needs of sustainability, energy saving, prefabrication and replacement of moving parts (post-expo) regarding the 'most delicate aspect of the "Italian Pavilion": the part Cardo.
