L'utopia della rovina. Il Lazzaretto di Verona

The project is about the re-functionalization of the lazaretto area in Verona and it aims to give rise to a new cultural attractive center in a mainly rural area, offering to combine the vitality of the city with the stillness of the countryside. The area of the project is located within the Adige Park borders, surrounded by the river. The thesis aims to develop the relationship between two different realities: the student housing and the agricultural glasshouse; built together in a single complex around the monument of the lazaretto ruins. The purpose to work with such a strong functional contrast comes from the motive to bring a new strong life to an area, which historically had an important role for the city, but that now has completely lost its centrality and relevance. Hence the name "The utopia of ruin", the rebirth of a place that no longer exists. The location, chosen in the past for its proximity to the river and its isolation from the city, has now made us able to make it part of the city life leaving the naturalistic aspect as unchanged as possible. In this way, the observer can immerse himself in the park and experience the place as it appears: harsh and lonely. The importance of this work can be traced back to the paternity of the project, namely the Verona architect Michele Sanmicheli. The project consists in two courtyard buildings: the residences to the north and the greenhouses to the south, detached from the monument with respect towards the ruins. This separation is perceived in the design but not in the identifying elements: the base, the long portico, the cells and the turrets, which instead represent the characteristics of union between the new and the old. The double-court layout wants to recreate the hypothetical original form of the lazaretto: the archetype of the enclosure, complete only if read in conjunction with the ruins. Therefore, the new center aims to hold together the different parts that distinguish the place (the park, the river, the rural aspect and the city aspect), placing itself with devotion, attention and discretion with respect to the history of the site.

Il progetto di rifunzionalizzazione dell’area del lazzaretto di Verona, si pone l’obiettivo di dar luogo a un nuovo polo attrattivo e culturale in un ambito non urbano, ma prevalentemente rurale, offrendosi come nuovo collante tra la vitalità della città e la quiete della campagna. Situata all’interno dei confini del Parco dell’Adige e cinta dall’ansa del fiume, la tesi si propone di sviluppare e integrare il rapporto tra due realtà molto distinte: quella della residenza universitaria e quella agricola delle serre, in un unico complesso sviluppato attorno al monumento delle rovine del lazzaretto. La volontà di approfondire un contrasto funzionale così forte, nasce dal punto di vista di “riattivare” e potenziare un’area che storicamente ha avuto un ruolo importante per la città, ma che, con lo scorrere del tempo, ha perso del tutto la sua centralità e rilevanza. Da ciò l’appellativo “ L’utopia della rovina”, la rinascita di un luogo che non esiste più. La posizione periferica del luogo, un tempo prescelta per la vicinanza con il fiume e l’isolamento dalla città, oggi ci ha concesso sia di renderlo parte della vita cittadina, sia di lascare il più invariato possibile l’aspetto naturalistico, permettendo all’osservatore di immergersi nel parco e vivere il luogo così come appare: aspro e solitario. L’importanza di tale opera è rintracciabile nella paternità del progetto, fatta risalire all’architetto veronese Michele Sanmicheli. Il progetto s’identifica come composto di due edifici a corte: a nord le residenze e a sud le serre, distaccati dal monumento e in un’ottica di rispetto verso la rovina. Separazione percepita dal disegno, ma non per gli elementi identificativi: il basamento, il lungo portico, le celle e le torrette, che rappresentano invece le caratteristiche d’unione tra il nuovo e il vecchio. La disposizione a doppia corte vuole ricreare l’ipotetica forma originaria del lazzaretto: l’archetipo del recinto, completo solo se letto in unione ai ruderi. Il nuovo polo si propone, dunque, di tenere insieme le diverse parti che contraddistinguono il luogo (il parco, il fiume, l’aspetto rurale e quello cittadino), ponendosi con devozione, attenzione e discrezione nei confronti della storia del sito.
