The work of thesis is part of a larger project concerning the regeneration of a former mill, now abandoned for some time, and of the rural complex annexed to it. The former mill of Gurone (Varese) today is called Casamatta and is managed by Legambiente; it is part of a small village located inside a rolling basin, protected from the floods of the Olona river by a circular embankment. The challenge was to create a project that had neither economic impact nor the exploitation of new resources, through the use of recycled or waste materials, giving them new life and rethinking their original ways of use. The operation was possible thanks to the collaboration of several local companies that supplied the raw materials. This has resulted in a type of design closely linked to the materials found. We are part of a period, of a generation of architects, who, like it or not, will have to deal with what today turns out to be one of the most important issues within society and which, within a few years, has come to characterize any type of productive and non-productive activity: the sustainability. Sustainable development, eco-compatibility, zero emissions, recycling: all terms that embellish an architectural project and which, in some cases, seem to be able to make the project gain a greater importance, regardless of the real consistence of them inside the project and of the final result. We must not be afraid to admit that today these concepts have assumed a greater value in marketing field than in the realization of concrete actions. For this reason we believe we have the responsability to make a choice: to choose whether to establish ourselves, just as the philosopher Walter Benjamin claimed,as suppliers or as producers of this system. Therefore, choose whether to "be satisfied" with meeting the needs and the requests of the society in an inactive way or to stand responsible such as to generate, even through small actions, a positive variation of the system within which we operate. Casamatta and Legambiente have given us the opportunity to question everything that until now we thought we had learned from the architecture studies. Criticism seen in a productive way, as a chance to look at something that we have observed from the same point of view for years from a different perspective.

Abstract
Criticism seen in a productive way, as a chance to look at something that we have observed from the same point of view for years from a different perspective.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
