Never more than today in my opinion has architecture been able to do without relating to the pre-existence. Whether it is design, adaptation or conservation, the architect’s task is to find a solution that meets the needs of the present while respecting what time has brought to us as an “undying testimony” of what has been. However, any type of approach to pre-existence presupposes the achievement of an in-depth knowledge of the artefact, which comprehensively reconstructs every aspect of its history and current state, in order to develop an intervention that is as appropriate as possible and avoids irreparable losses. The aim of this research is therefore to provide a method of approaching the pre-existence that is repeatable in the phases and methods and which, although variable to the specifics of each individual case, ensures a sufficiently exhaustive knowledge of the property. Starting from the skills acquired during my university experience and from my fields of interest, I wanted to apply the working method learned to a case study that is not yet investigated but in my opinion very interesting for the history of the city of Mantova: the Gambulini Tower. The diagnostic investigation project began with historical-critical research at the Archivio di Stato di Mantova aimed at learning about the interventions and changes in use suffered, inevitable sources of transformation of the building. This first phase was followed by the realization of the survey of the artefact through the support of photogrammetry with drone and laser scanner, which allowed to obtain precise informations both from a geometric and material point of view. The resulting investigations on the masonry and structural quality, focused on identifying any states of degradation and seismic vulnerability, were the necessary premise for the drafting of an adequate conservation and structural consolidation project, which would stop and resolve the inevitable deterioration process of the structure. At the end, starting from the belief that the use of the property is a fundamental prerequisite for its transmissibility over time, the project ended with a proposal for adaptation and reuse for the Tower, which has been in disuse for years, aimed at preparing a panoramic terrace on the city accessible to the public.

Abstract
At the end, starting from the belief that the use of the property is a fundamental prerequisite for its transmissibility over time, the project ended with a proposal for adaptation and reuse for the Tower, which has been in disuse for years, aimed at preparing a panoramic terrace on the city accessible to the public.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
