After closing of the pumice quarries in a few years the landscape of the island has changed profoundly, both in relation to the quarry area, and relatively to the buildings, especially the more recent ones characterized by an industrial production process, now in total abandonment. The history of the island is strongly linked to the excavation of pumice and, more in general, to its geological richness due to the volcanic origin that distinguishes the entire Aeolian archipelago. The economy of Lipari, in the past linked to obsidian and subsequently to pumice has been flourishing for centuries, thanks also to its strategic position in the trade routes of the Mediterranean. In the last century, the Mount Pilato slopes have provided work to entire generations until closure. Since then, the main source of income for Lipari Island is almost exclusively seasonal tourism linked to the sea. The variety and the exceptional nature of its landscapes, the volcano logical interest would be an important resource for a tourist seasonality. According to available statistics, the Aeolian population reaches up to 200,000 people during the summer (May-September) more than three times compared to a normal condition. UNESCO has promoted a Geopark of the Aeolian Islands, in which Lipari could play a central role. The enhancement of pumice quarries and its buildings is linked to this proposal. The general strategy of this submitted project is to put all the pumice places in one recognizable system, in particular, deepens a connection between the Fratelli La Cava factory (Sopra e Sotto), the Ferlazzo one, the sea, the pumice quarries and the top of Mount Pilato with its crater. Inside the Fratelli La Cava building, in the part above the street level, an information center and a volcanological museum are inserted, which dialogue with the pre-existing pumice production scenario.

Abstract
Inside the Fratelli La Cava building, in the part above the street level, an information center and a volcanological museum are inserted, which dialogue with the pre-existing pumice production scenario.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
