Shifting Albenga : reading and transforming the landscape

Located in Liguria, Albenga has undergone significant spatial transformations shaped by its historical and environmental relationship with the Centa River. Over time, this relationship has influenced the city’s urban structure, infrastructure, and landscape configuration, while also generating conditions of fragmentation and hydraulic vulnerability. Alongside the river, the presence and ongoing transformation of the railway infrastructure have further contributed to spatial discontinuities, reinforcing physical and functional divisions within the urban fabric. This thesis investigates Albenga’s valley as a dynamic territorial system, focusing on the intrinsic connection between the city, the river, and its infrastructural layers. Through a multiscalar analysis of landscape, topography, and urban development, the research identifies the structural elements that have shaped the city and the critical tensions that define its present condition. Based on this reading, the project proposes adaptive landscape strategies aimed at reconfiguring the relationship between urban fabric, fluvial space, and infrastructure. By rethinking topography, spatial continuity, and the transformation of the railway corridor, the thesis outlines a framework for future interventions that can become an opportunity for reconnection and ecological resilience. Rather than separating the city from its natural and infrastructural dynamics, the proposal positions the river as a structuring element capable of guiding integrated and adaptable development

Situata in Liguria, Albenga ha attraversato nel tempo significative trasformazioni spaziali, profondamente influenzate dalla sua relazione storica e ambientale con il fiume Centa. Tale relazione ha modellato la struttura urbana, le infrastrutture e la configurazione paesaggistica della città, generando al contempo condizioni di frammentazione e vulnerabilità idraulica. Accanto al sistema fluviale, la presenza e la trasformazione della linea ferroviaria hanno ulteriormente contribuito a produrre discontinuità spaziali, rafforzando divisioni fisiche e funzionali all’interno del tessuto urbano. La tesi indaga la valle di Albenga come sistema territoriale dinamico, concentrandosi sulla connessione intrinseca tra città, fiume e infrastrutture. Attraverso una lettura multiscalare del paesaggio, della topografia e degli strati di sviluppo urbano, la ricerca individua gli elementi strutturali che hanno definito la crescita della città e le tensioni critiche che ne caratterizzano la condizione attuale. A partire da questa analisi, il progetto propone strategie paesaggistiche adattive volte a riconfigurare il rapporto tra tessuto urbano, spazio fluviale e infrastrutture. Ripensando la topografia, la continuità spaziale e la trasformazione del corridoio ferroviario, la tesi delinea un quadro di interventi futuri che possono costituire un’opportunità di riconnessione territoriale e resilienza ecologica. Piuttosto che separare la città dalle sue dinamiche naturali e infrastrutturali, la proposta individua nel fiume l’elemento strutturante capace di guidare uno sviluppo integrato, sostenibile e adattivo.
