Monte Mottarone, an historic destination for winter sports enthusiasts, overlooking Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta and Lake Mergozzo, is now one of the many mountain resorts affected by the effects of climate change, forced to base its activities on the use of economically and ecologically unsustainable techniques. How to evolve the character of a place, enhancing its ecological and landscape potential, without erasing its history? With its 360-degree view, Monte Mottarone achieves an invaluable landscape potential for the Verbano area, with the view, from its summit, of the Swiss Alps, Lake Varese, and as far as Monte Rosa. Mainly during the 20th Century, it was the scene of a great infrastructural and touristic transformation, which occurred, however, in an almost casual manner. Moving from a mainly forest and livestock-raising landscape to one characterized by sports facilities, skiing, accommodation facilities, vehicular roads, and railways, which were also replaced over time by cableways, that led to various deforestation and ecological cuts. In detail, the summit of Monte Mottarone, during both the winter and summer months, remains a popular destination for locals as well as foreign tourists and tourists from other regions. Today the summit area become an open-air parking lot due to the closure of the cable car after the May 2021 accident and the impossibility, therefore, of reaching it using public or sustainable transports, except, for the most trained, by bicycle. Despite the scarce snowfall in recent years, the slopes and peaks of the Mount are still dominated by the presence of ski facilities and the infrastructure needed for them, placing little value on the other sports that will surely be protagonists of the mountain’s future, such as trekking, downhill, climbing, and paragliding. Therefore, the project aims to propose large-scale actions that can rearrange the infrastructural and built mosaic, that has today altered the landscape and ecological setting of Monte Mottarone. The proposed strategies will be directed to the removal and reintegration of what is superfluous and what needs to be enhanced instead, in order to be able to project Monte Mottarone towards more sustainable, ecologically and touristically, future changes. At the same time, punctual landscape tools will be designed and proposed to help this transition, enhancing the landscape potential of the Mount, and that can adapt to functional changes that may occur in the future.

Abstract
At the same time, punctual landscape tools will be designed and proposed to help this transition, enhancing the landscape potential of the Mount, and that can adapt to functional changes that may occur in the future.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
