The object of this thesis is the activation of spatial process in the Island of the Taranto Old City. These process are triggered by eight different projects. The interventions are situated in very sensitive areas and aim at converting their weak and discomfort factors into strength, cohesion and vitality elements. The design long-term goal is to become prototype re-activation examples: indeed, once these models are entered into the urban context, and are accepted and assimilated by the population, they might be replicated - with the appropriate adaptations - in other spaces, thus generating a “domino” effect spreading throughout the city. The inhabitants requirements have been the base elements for the whole intervention: their needs, habits and lifestyle were the mandatory principles of the design strategy. They, the persons living the island essence everyday, have been our starting point. Interviews have been carried out and then scientifically classified and analyzed. In addition to their high instructive and cognitive value, the interviews revealed to be dense and highly emotional, uncovering feelings that people had been hiding unconsciously for long. Pure, necessary feelings, the lack of which would have meant a new start impossible. Feelings that made a worthy and coherent research and mapping possible, thus identifying the most fragile areas for the intervention. These inherent tools full of history and life are implanted in the island labyrinthine spatiality, developing an integrated system of interventions, the force of which is typically its dualism: on one side there are specific projects, careful as an acupuncture gently touching the patient on his more painful points; on the other side they determine a dense and widespread network all over the island. This network extends from the underground space excavated in the rock, to the terrace of the highest building from which a breathless view can be enjoyed. Everything is in full respect of the existing situation, no matter the condition it is: from an excellent well maintained structure to the more critic architectural and archeological emergency The imperative is to set the island in motion again by improving everyday vivibility, by implementing the socio-cultural processes overcoming the building limits and convert them into productive energy. This strategic concept will only work if consistent information and participation are present. We started from the inhabitants, and we intend to return them areas equipped with tools thought and made exclusively for that space and for those persons As a consequence, our design strategy target identifies the most adhering vision to the specific nature and potentials of the Taranto Old City, its central geo-physical position, its hystorical build-up and its foundational relationship with the sea. This is the union of “site-specific” with “people-specific”. Last but not least... we love to recall the tales and the smiles, lunches dinners and beers, friends-making, screams and moods of a City, whose only “old” is the way it is governed.

Abstract
Last but not least... we love to recall the tales and the smiles, lunches dinners and beers, friends-making, screams and moods of a City, whose only “old” is the way it is governed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
